Core Principle: Optical Interference Effect
The color in decorative coatings is produced primarily not by pigments, but through optical interference. The fundamental principles are:
Thin-Film Interference: A single or multiple layers of very thin transparent or semi-transparent films (typically on the nanometer to micrometer scale) are deposited on the substrate (e.g., metal, glass, plastic).
Optical Path Difference (OPD): When light strikes the film layer, part of the light is reflected from the top surface of the film, while another part penetrates the film and is reflected from the bottom surface. When these two reflected beams meet, they have a phase difference due to the difference in the distance they have traveled (the optical path).
Constructive and Destructive Interference:
Constructive Interference: When the optical path difference is equal to an integer multiple of the wavelength of a specific color of light, that color is enhanced, and we perceive this vibrant color.
Destructive Interference: When the optical path difference is equal to a half-integer multiple of the wavelength, that color of light is weakened or even eliminated.
Color Control: By precisely controlling the material, thickness, and number of layers of the coating, specific interference colors can be designed and manufactured, such as rose gold, titanium gold, deep blue, purple, green, as well as angle-dependent "rainbow" effects.
